Chevrolet boasted that the Corvette was The First of the Dream Cars to Come True. This particular Corvette has all the right bits; Blue Flame engine, Polo White paint, red interior, whitewalls mounted on red wheels, and of course the timeless styling that has caused so many folks to take a second look. This car is truly easy on the eyes.As with any completely new model and platform, there is a bit of a risk that is taken by manufacturers at the introductory stage. Who would’ve known in 1954 as the first iteration of the Corvette reached its second year of production, that 38 years later the Corvette would reach one million vehicles produced. The Corvette production total is an important thing to consider in the case of this particular car. In 1992 this ’54 Corvette was displayed as part of the One Millionth Corvette celebration. As part of the celebration display at GM Headquarters in Detroit Michigan, this car sat alongside many Corvette production cars, as well as prototypes like the unforgettable Mako Shark. As a 1954 model year car, this car is an early piece of the Corvette legacy. Only 6340 Corvettes were produced for the 1954 model year, and it wasn’t until 1963 that Corvette yearly production surpassed 20k units. Corvettes were not often seen in the early days, which is a stark difference from what we are used to today. This Corvette is finished in the eye-catching factory color combination of white over a red interior, which is the same color combination as the millionth Corvette which rolled off the line in 1992. The technical term for the exterior is Polo White, which was the most common color for the ’54 model year. The revolutionary-at-the-time fiberglass body of this particular car is in very nice condition with doors, trunk lid, and hood lining up as they should. The paint is from an older restoration and has a few chips that have been touched up at the front and the rear of the car. Trim and brightwork is in nice condition, and much of it looks to be original. As to be expected with a highly original, 68 year old car, a few small spots of pitting in the chrome are visible. Friendly, flowing lines of the car are definitely pleasing to the eye, with GM styling cues of the time easy to pick out.Inside the car are simple bucket seats that are enveloped on either side by body lines that flow from the rear of the car into the interior. A simple, elegant dashboard which is finished in Polo White and topped with a red dash pad, houses an array of gauges and switches. A large tachometer sits in the center flanked by fuel, temperature, battery, and oil pressure gauges, and a clock. A sweeping speedometer which is very similar in looks and shape to a mid-50’s Bel Air sits just in front of the driver, on the other side of the thin rimmed steering wheel. Chrome trim inside the car looks to be original, and does show a little bit of pitting. Once seated in this car, it’s clear that this Corvette was built with the idea of creating a luxury sports car. The large steering wheel, door pockets, easily visible gauges, and an AM signal seeking radio complement the luxurious seats, which feature piping and a nod to tuck and roll stitching thanks to the rows of stitching at the center of the seats. A simple factory soft top finished in Beige is in place beneath the fiberglass tonneau cover, however it shows some age. The trunk is upholstered in red, and features a pouch which holds the additional side windows that can be installed when the top is up. Beneath the hood is the Blue Flame 150 inline-6 mated to a 2-speed Powerglide Transmission. A trio of Carter carburetors keep the air/fuel mixture in check. Much like the rest of the car, the engine bay looks to be highly original. In preparation for sale, the engine and supporting mechanicals were gone over by a technician who is very experienced in working on vintage Corvettes. Fresh fluids were added, and a number of new parts were installed including: a new battery, new ignition parts, brake hoses, wheel cylinders front and rear, and the carbs were rebuilt. Whether you’re a fan of Corvette and have owned one of each generation, or you’re looking for a collectible classic with beautiful styling to enjoy. You have to appreciate the vision and the final product which has now become an American Icon. This Corvette which is finished in Polo White over Red interior would make an awesome addition to your collection.
